| A interesting hiking destination on our ranch is an
Indian site of
bedrock mortars or grinding holes. This type of mortar and pestle was used by the
Indians of Texas to grind up acorns or other seeds.
Archaeologists believe the Indian women would start with a natural hole or
concavity in the rock, and, after being used for hundreds of years , the holes
would get deeper. Holes like the ones on our ranch must have been used for
many, many
generations.
Additional information on this type of mortar and pestle
can be found at
http://www.texasindians.com/ on the page "Mortars and Pestles" by
Edward Moore. His extensive site also has info on how the Indians prepared acorn meal.
